Understand the Coils.

What Is a “Coil” in Deep TMS?

In BrainsWay Deep TMS, a coil is the specialized component inside the helmet that delivers gentle magnetic pulses to targeted brain regions.

Each coil is uniquely designed to stimulate specific neural circuits based on the condition being treated.

Think of it like choosing the right tool for the job—a wrench for one bolt, a screwdriver for another. The shape and orientation of each coil determine how deep and where the energy reaches in the brain.

 H1 Coil – For Depression

🎯 Target Area: Left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC)

  • Location: Upper left side of the brain’s frontal lobe

  • Function: Regulates mood, motivation, executive function, and emotional balance

Why it matters:

In people with major depressive disorder, the DLPFC often becomes underactive, like a dimmed control center for joy, energy, and decision-making.

The H1 coil delivers focused magnetic pulses that help reactivate this area, improving neural communication and emotional regulation.

Visual Metaphor: Imagine plugging your brain’s mood battery into a charger—that’s what the H1 coil does for your emotional circuitry.

 H7 Coil – For Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

🎯 Target Area: Medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC) + Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC)

  • Location: Deep midline region of the frontal brain

  • Function: Involved in error detection, behavioral regulation, emotional conflict, and compulsive control

 Why it matters:

The brains of individuals with OCD often show hyperactivity in the mPFC and ACC—leading to looping thoughts and compulsive behaviors.

The H7 coil helps modulate and calm this network, disrupting the repetitive feedback loop that drives OCD symptoms.

Visual Metaphor: It’s like applying a neural “reset” button to a stuck worry cycle.

H4 Coil – For Smoking Addiction

🎯 Target Area: Bilateral Insula + Lateral Prefrontal Cortex

  • Location: Both sides of the deep brain folds near the ears and sides of the forehead

  • Function: Tied to craving, reward processing, and impulse control

Why it matters:

Nicotine addiction hijacks the brain’s reward system.

The insula plays a key role in the emotional drive to smoke, while the prefrontal cortex helps with self-control.

The H4 coil simultaneously stimulates these two regions to reduce cravings and improve decision-making capacity, especially during stressful moments.

Visual Metaphor: It’s like rewiring the brain’s response to “I need a cigarette” and replacing it with “I’m in control.”
