Understanding Chronic Pain: A Focus on Neuropathy

Neuropathy, a common condition, affects approximately 50% of individuals with long-standing diabetes.

Among its various forms, symmetric distal sensorimotor polyneuropathy is particularly prevalent, with pain being a dominant and often debilitating symptom.

While painful neuropathy can respond to certain medications like antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and opioid agonists, these drugs are frequently ineffective or can lead to severe side effects.

This highlights a critical need for safe and effective alternative treatments to manage this chronic condition.

In some cases, invasive neurostimulation techniques, including brain stimulation and epidural motor cortex stimulation, are already successfully employed to treat neuropathic pain that doesn't respond to conventional medications.

Deep TMS Treatment for Chronic Pain

Traditional TMS coils, like the figure-of-eight coil, can only stimulate superficial brain regions because increasing the stimulus intensity to reach deeper areas would raise the risk of adverse effects.

BrainsWay's innovative H-coil technology, however, allows for deeper brain stimulation without significantly increasing the intensity of induced fields in superficial cortical regions.

This unique capability enables the H-coil to stimulate areas like the lower-limb motor cortex, which is tucked deep within the medial longitudinal fissure, offering a novel approach to pain management.

Clinical Evidence

A recent study explored the use of Deep TMS over the deeper lego motor cortex to treat patients experiencing diabetic neuropathic pain.

Twenty-five patients participated in the study, receiving treatment with the HMMC-coil, specifically designed to effectively activate neuronal structures in the motor cortex, including the deeper leg motor cortex, with hemispheric symmetry.

Patients were randomly assigned to receive either active or sham (placebo) Deep TMS daily for five consecutive days, in a crossover design with five-week intervals between treatments.
